My iPod's battery is depleted while it's off!?

My iPod's battery has been going down very fast. It seems like when I turn it off for the night, the next day, there's only a little life left. I have to charge it, and it also charges very fast. Instead of 3 to 4 hours, it takes about 1. How can I restore the battery life??
