Sewing basics for a beginner?

Hi, I recently decided to start sewing my own clothes. Im currently in the process of looking for sewing lessons. I wanted to know if you guys think its a good idea to start off with a cheap sewing machine like the ones at the Goodwill or resale shops since im a beginner and what type should I look for? Also do you know of any places in or around chicago that offer free or cheap sewing lessons?
